The HEDNO (Hellenic Electricity Distribution Network Operator S.Α.) was established in April 2012 with the secession of the Distribution sector of PPC S.Α. in accordance with Law 4001/2011 and in compliance with EU Directive 2009/72/EC . It is a 100% subsidiary of PPC S.Α., however is independent functionally and administratively, in compliance with all the requirements of independence incorporated in the above legal framework. 
HEDNO’s tasks comprise the operation, maintenance and development of the electricity distribution network in Greece in order to ensure transparent and non-discriminatory access of all consumers and more generally of all users of the network.
In order to improve service quality as expressed by energy quality indices (number of failures, time of restoration, quality of voltage waveforms, etc.) along with the reduction of the operating cost and the increase of productivity, important investments in the network have been made in order to:

  • Increase network efficiency in order to supply  the continuously increasing demand  
  • Enhance network reliability and decrease losses  by construction of new lines and substations and  upgrade of existing ones.
  • Introduce operation automation (installation of remote metering and remote control systems)
  • Construction of networks compatible to societal requirements (taking care of the harmonization of new constructions with the natural and built environment).
Basic figures  of the Electricity Distribution network (end 2011)
Total length of MV/LV Network of 228.900 km, of which the Medium Voltage (MV) Network is 107.500 km and the  Low Voltage (LV) Network is 121.400 km.
The high-voltage (HV) grid is 949 km, of which 205 km in Attica and 744 km in non-interconnected Islands 
The network includes 154.950 MV/LV Substations and 224 HV/MV Substations  including 20 GIS substations, 199 in the mainland system and 25 in non-interconnected Islands.
 HEDNO serves 7.503.265 customers (10.147 at MV and 7.493.118 at LV). 
Main tasks in the project
HEDNO main focus will be on MV networks with high penetration of RES aiming to develop operational and planning tools and exploiting the installation of a new DMS system. HEDNO will be involved in the testing and validation of various modules providing the related technical and historical data as well online access to the demonstration sites in WP4 and WP5. It will also participate in the definition of the overall system architecture in WP1.
