The IIT, Institute for Research in Technology, belongs to the School of Engineering (ICAI) of Comillas Pontificial University of Madrid (Comillas). Its main aim is to promote research and postgraduate training in diverse technological fields through participation in specific projects of interest for Industry and the Government. It is a non-profit Institute, which aims to be flexible and pragmatic in the way it works. It is essentially financed by projects contracted by companies, and thus responds to a clear social demand.
ITT-Comillas is the leading institution in Spain on the development of integrated models for the operation and planning of electricity systems under deregulation, and has provided extensive international consultancy on electricity market designs and network regulation. It gathers more than 60 researchers and nearly 50 full time doctoral students. Its main activities are focused on the design and development of computational models of the diverse aspects of electricity systems as well as on advising and consultancy tasks, mainly about the analysis and design of new regulatory frameworks.
Within the SUSTAINABLE project IIT-Comillas will be represented by the Smart and Green Networks Research Group. This is an interdisciplinary group at the IIT which is focused on the analysis and development of models for the simulation and optimization of future electricity networks.
These networks will enable us to ensure the viability of the model of sustainable energy required by society in the 21st century. This model is characterised by the centrality of the role of renewable energies with distributed characteristics, by a flexible energy demand and the capacity to meet that demand, and by a quality of service which meets the expectations of the digital society.
ITT-Comillas has participated in many European and national research projects addressing the integration of renewable energies, smart grids, active demand management, and electric vehicles. These research topics have been addressed at the generation, transmission and distribution levels. Relevant European projects are the following, in chronological order: GRID4EU, TWENTIES, SUSPLAN, MERGE, ADDRESS, RESPOND, IMPROGRES, SOLID-DER or DG-GRID.

Main contribution to the project
ITT-Comillas will lead the work in WP6, focused on the economic and regulatory implications of the SUSTAINABLE concept. It will be involved in all tasks of this workpackage, particularly in the cost-benefit analysis and the impact in the economic regulation of DSOs. Additionally, IIT-Comillas will develop the scaling-up and replication rules of the SUSTAINABLE concept in other frameworks and countries across Europe. In this topic, IIT-Comillas will analyze the local implementation conditions that may have an impact on the scaling up and replication of the project results.
SuSTAINABLE is a European project under the Seventh Framework Programme for Research and Technological Development with contract No: 308755
